<image:caption>Good evening, my name is Betsy Weiland and I am speaking on behalf of Save the American River. The slides for our public comment were created by Dr. Anna Doty, an Assistant Professor at California State University, Sacramento. Today, I’d like to briefly speak to you about using the American River Parkway as an educational tool for students from the San Juan Unified School District.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The American River Parkway is an important tool that should be used to the benefit of our students, rather than depleted and seen as a barrier for expansion. The American River Parkway provides a myriad of scientific learning opportunities for students from multiple disciplines, including physics, biology, and chemistry and thus encourages a direct pathway to state careers, which provide a stable professional outcome for our students.</image:caption>

<image:caption>We encourage the San Juan Unified School District to develop and implement the STEAM program to encourage students to invest in the sciences. For example, students could observe birds, mammals, and lizards on the parkway to better understand local ecology and wildlife biology. The plants that have evolved in this region over millennia provide a better understanding of forest and habitat succession. Truly, the possibilities are endless and only require the willingness to work towards a better union of education and environmental respect.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Unfortunately, the construction and expansion of Rio Americano’s intended high- capacity sports and event stadium are in direct contradiction to this goal. The negative effects of even small amounts of noise and light pollution on wildlife are well- documented. Wildlife will avoid areas with even a modest increase in noise and light, which in turns will have detrimental effects on the plants in the area and even the nutrients that support the health of the river. It is incredibly important that we have respect for the area not only for the organisms that call the American River Parkway home, but also for the students that so desperately need a deeper connection to the natural world. As stewards of both our students’ success and the American River, I urge you to consider the detrimental effects of a stadium expansion on our future generations.</image:caption>
